HooBikes -- A Campus Transit System for UVA

HooBikes are bicycles for public use on and around the campus of the University of Virginia. The brightly painted bikes are maintained by volunteers from the campus and the Virginia Cycling Club.

During the school year, abandoned bikes collect in the university's bicycle racks. At the end of the school year, the department of Parking and Transportation removes the bikes and auctions them in large lots to bicycle wholesalers. In the HooBikes program, volunteers restore the bikes to working order, paint them, and register them with the University Police. The bikes remain in the campus community, easing transportation and reducing automotive traffic, while increasing the visibility of cycling as a popular form of transportation.

Donations of equipment, time, or money are always welcome, and may be made to the local bicycle companies listed below, or to the Virginia Cycling Club.
